Lives and works in London
Wilmotte Gallery and Perimiter Art & Design
are delighted to collabotrate on an exhibition
of glass work of Paola Petrobelli for The London
Design Festival.
Born in Padua, trained in biology and a former
international motor racing champion, Paola
Petrobelli has based her glass design practice in
London for more than ten years, working
exclusively with Murano glass. In that time she
has specialized in glass works for private
commissions and art collectors in the UK, Italy
and France and has extended her practice to
public commissions in the world of luxury
hotels and restaurants such as the Club at the
Ivy in London.
The installation at the Willmotte Gallery
presents new work as well as the wall lights,
ceiling lights and lamps Petrobelli has become
known for. They are presented in both a gallery
and domestic context. Petrobelli recreates her
own living room in the space in order to
highlight the interplay between the striking
visual quality of the glass and its functionality.
All the works are infused with Petrobelli’s
interest in the architectural quality of glass.
The new brick-like modules are inspired by
industrial elements of modernist design.
However, unlike their flawless example
‘Accidents’ occur in these works manifested in
the form of delicate glass insects inhabiting the
space. These twists refer to the craftsmen of
Italian Gothic stained-glass who would add tiny
drawings such as spiders webs to the corner of
a window as a private joke for their own
expression and amusement.
